MSU Extension  Offers Online  Extras Parenting Hour:

This free series of parenting workshops will provide parenting guidance for parents of young children as they navigate the joys, challenges and concerns of parenting. Participants may register for as few or as many workshops as they wish. The workshops are as follows:

Working Together to Develop Early Literacy Skills (Infant/Toddler):
While infants and toddlers aren’t ready to read just yet, parents and caregivers can learn and practice ways to help children develop a strong foundation for important literacy skills. Participants will learn about the importance of reading on grade level by 3rd grade, learn and understand the components of early literacy such as experiential writing, communicating, vocabulary, and reading and rhyme with infants and toddlers, learn to detect the signs of early literacy difficulties and receive resources to support early literacy development.

Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Neurodiversity:

This program will explain what Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is and what it is not and ways you can support your family and your child with ASD. After the program you should be able to identify features associated with a diagnosis of ASD, common myths and misconceptions about ASD and strategies to support families and individuals with ASD.

Together We Can: Co-parenting:

Parenting is a team effort. The adults in a child’s life need to consider their children’s needs as they parent together. Build upon your knowledge and skills to promote healthy family and parenting relationships.  This workshop is for all parents (married, divorced, single, step, etc.)

Essential Skills for Learning and Life:
From birth children begin learning about the world around them. There are some essential skills that help set children up for success in learning and in life. Essential Skills for Learning and Life will help parents learn about social emotional intelligence, the critical skills children need to learn and how you can incorporate them into everyday interactions with young children and gain resources to support skill building.

Talking With Kids About Race:
Talking about race and racism can be intimidating and uncomfortable but talking openly about racism, bias and differences is critical to raising antiracist children and transforming systems of oppression.
This session for parents and caregivers will address the following topics and allow time for discussion and Q&A.
What are social identities?
What is racism and anti-racism?
Why should I talk about race?
How should I talk about race?

Mindfulness for Children:
Techniques of mindful awareness can help children learn to pay closer attention to their thoughts, feelings and emotions. Learn ways to help children reduce stress and anxiety to enhance their well being. Explore what the research says, get ideas for mindfulness activities and explore children’s literacy that supports mindfulness
practices.
