Great Start recognizes the importance of community involvement and the value of opportunities for families to learn and grow together. We have created these community calendars as a way to share timely community events with you. If you know of any events please take time to add them to our community calendar or forward the information to Please encourage the agencies and organizations that you partner with to do so as well so we can have a comprehensive one stop shop for early childhood information in our communities.

Three FREE Weekend! (Fishing, Parks and ORV Trails)

August 17

The summer Free Fishing Weekend is held in conjunction with “Three Free” weekend, where residents and nonresidents can grab a fishing rod, ride the off-road trails and visit state parks and boating access sites - all free of charge. During Free ORV Weekend, Michigan residents and visitors legally can ride without buying an ORV license or trail permit. All other ORV rules and laws still apply. Two days twice a year, families and friends can enjoy one of Michigan's premier outdoor activities, Michigan fishing, for FREE!

All fishing license fees will be waived for two days. Residents and out-of-state visitors may enjoy fishing on both inland and Great Lakes waters for all species of fish. All fishing regulations will still apply.

Recreation Passport will NOT be required for entry into state parks and boating access sites during Free Fishing Weekends.

Want to know when future Free Fishing Weekends will be? The winter weekend is always the Saturday and Sunday of President's Day weekend and the summer weekend is always the Saturday and Sunday following the first full week of June.

Taking place twice a year, Free ORV Weekend is a great time to see, experience and test out Michigan’s off-road vehicle trails. Residents and out-of-state visitors legally can ride Michigan's 4,000 miles of off-road vehicle trails and routes and the state’s six scramble areas on two back-to-back days without an ORV license or trail permit.

This year's free weekends take place June 8-9 and Aug. 17-18, 2024.

  • All other ORV rules and laws still apply.
  • You must supply your own ORV.
  • Typically, there is an entrance fee at Holly Oaks ORV Park (although no Recreation Passport required), but the fee will is waived this year.

Michigan also offers a Free Snowmobile Weekend each year.
