10/4 -10/25/18 Preschool Art and Music Thursdays 10:30am-11:15am for 4&5 year olds. A joyful experience for preschool-aged children and their caregivers. Young artists will explore layering, textures, and colors in varied mediums such as paint, clay and drawing. Our MISSION is to create a team of parents, working together, to provide families with information,
a supportive network, and the chance to make a positive difference in Delta County.
We work to ensure ALL children enter kindergarten safe, ready, and eager to learn.

years to the YMCA for games, swimming, pizza and fun while you

10/19/18 Halloween Movie Night: Hocus Pocus 7pm in Ludington
Park in the Karas Band shell. Come out for a family friendly movie.

Trick or Treat times

Be safe while trick-or-treating: Costumes should be short
enough that children will not trip, hard plastic or wooden
props should be avoided in favor of items made from foam
rubber. Masks should allow for proper respiration and full peripheral
vision. Children should carry brightly-colored bags and
flashlights or glow sticks. Reflective tape can be added to the
sides, front, and back of costumes for added visibility. Young
trick-or-treaters should always be accompanied by an adult.
Older children should travel in pairs or groups, and notify their
parents of the route they plan to take. Watch for traffic, be
sure to cross the street at crosswalks, and avoid dark houses
and streets. Adults have an important role to play ensuring
that Halloween is safe and fun!

This past year the Delta County Great Start Parent Coalition was awarded $105,000 in Race to the Top Trusted Advisors grants from the Michigan Department of Education. Through this funding we were able to support the work of the Delta-Schoolcraft Great Start Collaborative and make a powerful impact in Delta County. Take a look at what we have accomplished in 1 year!
 Hosted 12 Family Fun (Literacy) Nights with over 570 people attending
 Distributed nearly 400 books at Fun Fest with over 600 people attending and 28 community partners partici-pating
 Hosted 11 Social Emotional Trainings (Positive Parenting) with 98 attending in 4 locations around the county
 Reach Out & Read programs begun at 2 locations. Pediatricians providing literacy development infor-mation and free books at well checks at Doctor’s Park and OSF Family Medicine practices.
 Created and distributed 600 Kindergarten Readiness Bags to Delta County 4 year olds
 Held 6 Literacy Camps 3 in Escanaba /3 in Gladstone with 166 kids/93 families attending
 $578 Raised for literacy fund
 Re-designed and expanded our website www.great-start.org to include developmental screenings, a com-munity calendar, literacy and learning tips, child development information and community resources.
 Distributed 500 flyers and created an awesome float in the Gladstone 4th of July Parade!
 Distributed over 3000 books between fun fest, supporting community agencies, outreach and literacy events. (Even more with the Reach out and Read programs!)
 Hosted Great Start Family Picnic on 8/5/18, 49 people attended, 2 new families attending
 Held 12 Parent Coalition meetings - 4 new families joining and 50 attending the Great Start Christmas Party
 Hosted Read & Rise Family Workshop at OSF hospital. Giving parents the tools they need to help their chil-dren read & succeed…and more to come!
This is what happens when a group of dedicated families come together. Our dreams can become reality. The Delta County Great Start Parent Coalition works diligently to assure kids are born healthy, are developmentally, on track, ready to enter school and succeed, and reading proficiently by third grade. We know that this gives all kids a great start in school and life. We lend our voices and talents in the development and implementation of Great Start’s goals to build a strong early childhood system and a great place to raise our families. Not only that, we have fun! We welcome you to join us as we learn, work and network at our monthly meetings. You can be a part of making a positive difference in your children, community and in the lives of others.
